Mead—Honey Wine
Mead is a wine made from fermented honey and water. It is an ancient drink with a long and
colorful history. It has been enjoyed in such diverse lands as India, Scandinavia and
Ethiopia. In the colder, non-grape producing regions of Northern Europe, mead was the only
wine that was known. Our term honey-moon comes from the tradition of newlyweds drinking
mead for the first month of their marriage.
Mead is easy to make at home. It can be made sweet or dry,
depending on how much honey and what type of yeast you use. Fruit, herbs and spices are
all popular additions to traditional meads. We carry several varieties of local honey and
can special order dozens more. If you are interested in trying your hand at this
fascinating and deliciuous beverage, stop by and pick up a copy of our meadmaking
